What is Holiness and Why is it Important?
The pursuit of holiness is a core element of a true follower's life. It's understood that without holiness, one cannot see God. Holiness isn't just about following rules, but about living a life that reflects God's character and seeking to be like Him.
The Pursuit of Holiness: Love in Action
The pursuit of holiness is not optional for the true follower of Christ—it’s essential. Scripture is clear: “Without holiness no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). But holiness isn’t about rule-keeping or self-righteousness. It’s about becoming more like God—reflecting His character, walking in His Spirit, and living out His love.
Why Holiness Matters
1. God Requires It
God doesn’t ask for holiness as a suggestion—it’s a requirement. Hebrews 12:14 doesn’t mince words. Holiness is the passport to God’s presence. Without it, we remain strangers to Him.
2. It Reflects God’s Character
We are commanded to be holy because God is holy (1 Peter 1:16). To pursue holiness is to strive to mirror His nature—His purity, His love, His truth.
3. It's Evidence of True Faith
A life of holiness is the fruit of genuine salvation. You can say you’ve believed in Christ—but if your life hasn’t changed, it’s time to examine what kind of faith you really have. True faith produces holiness.
4. It's Preparation for Heaven
Heaven is a holy place. No sin enters there. If we don’t desire holiness now, we won’t enjoy heaven later. Holiness is the dress rehearsal for eternity.
5. It's Life in the Spirit
Holiness isn’t something we muster up by willpower. It's the result of living in step with the Holy Spirit—putting to death the old self and embracing the new.
6. It's Intimacy with Jesus
The closer we walk with Christ, the more we desire holiness. Why? Because holiness is the natural result of abiding in Him. He purifies what He touches.

7. It's Love in ActionJesus showed us that holiness isn’t cold or judgmental. It’s love expressed through how we live. Holiness means treating others with grace, standing for truth, and embodying the love of Christ. That’s real holiness—love in action.
The Deeper Guarding of the HeartToo often we think holiness means protecting ourselves from what enters our eyes, ears, or minds—avoiding porn, profanity, violence, or bad influences. That’s important, yes—but it misses the deeper issue.
Look again at Proverbs 4:23:“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
It doesn’t say, “Guard your heart from what goes in.” It says everything flows out of it. The problem isn’t just external pollution—it’s internal corruption.
Jesus made the same point in Matthew 15:17–20:
“What comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and these defile a man… evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander…”
Sin starts inside. It doesn’t sneak in through a TV screen—it flows from a heart not surrendered to God.
The Bottom LineHoliness isn’t about perfect behavior. It’s about a transformed heart. It’s not just what you avoid—it’s what you pursue. It’s not about checking religious boxes—it’s about loving God so deeply that your life naturally reflects Him.
If you’re truly in Christ, holiness isn’t a burden—it’s your new nature. And it’s the undeniable mark of every real believer.
So ask yourself: Is holiness growing in me? Is love flowing through me? Am I being changed from the inside out?
Because without holiness—real, Spirit-born, love-in-action holiness—we won’t see the Lord.
